Why We Use Nitrogen
Why We Use Nitrogen Fusion
You may hear plastic repair referred to as “plastic welding,” but what we do is more accurately described as Nitrogen Fusion.
So, why nitrogen?
Nitrogen is an inert shielding gas. During the repair process, it displaces oxygen from the repair area, creating a controlled environment where the damaged base plastic and the compatible plastic repair rod can be heated and fused together.
Removing oxygen from the repair zone is important because it helps reduce oxidation, burning, and carbon contamination while the plastic is being heated. This allows us to produce a cleaner, stronger, and more consistent fusion between the original material and the repair material.
Think back to the basic fire triangle:
Oxygen + Fuel + Heat = Fire
When plastic is heated in the presence of oxygen, it can oxidize, scorch, and degrade. Nitrogen helps shield the heated repair area from oxygen, allowing us to focus the heat on properly fusing the materials rather than burning them.
That is why, at Lone Star Plastic Repair, we don't simply heat plastic and call it a repair. We use controlled heat, compatible repair materials, and nitrogen shielding to create a proper fusion repair.
